Abstract

Mental illness is a growing public health concern globally, with various social, economic, and health-related factors contributing to its prevalence. This study aimed to identify the factors associated with mental illness within the community of Ngarama Subcounty, Isingiro District, focusing on social, economic, and health-related influences. A cross-sectional study design using quantitative methods was employed to collect data from a sample of 50 respondents selected through cluster sampling in Ngarama Subcounty. Structured questionnaires were used for data collection, and the results were analyzed using SPSS. The findings were presented in tables, graphs, and charts. The study found that 40% of respondents rated their living conditions as moderate, while 24% rated them as poor. Additionally, 68% of respondents had not experienced violence, and 50% reported being affected by natural disasters. Economic factors, including financial stress (frequently experienced by 24%), unemployment (30%), and limited access to healthcare (24%), were significant contributors to mental illness. Regarding health-related factors, 24% of respondents reported a family history of mental illness, and 30% cited limited access to mental health services. The study concluded that moderate living conditions, economic stress, limited access to healthcare, and a family history of mental illness are major contributors to mental illness in Ngarama Subcounty. It is recommended that the government prioritize improving living conditions through better housing, water access, and sanitation, alongside enhancing access to mental health services to address the growing mental health burden in the community.
