Abstract

The main purpose of the study was to examine the effect of students’ attitudes on the use of traditional libraries in universities, using Bishop Stuart University and Mbarara University of Science and Technology as case studies. A cross-sectional research design and a mixed-methods approach were employed, as this allows for the concurrent handling of both qualitative and quantitative data. Purposive, stratified, and random sampling techniques were used to select a sample size of 380 from a target population of 5,000. Questionnaire, interview, and document review methods were used in the study, with questionnaires, interview guides, and document checklists serving as the instruments for data collection. Descriptive and inferential statistics, primarily Pearson correlation and linear regression, were used to analyze the data. The results indicate a strong, positive, and statistically significant relationship between students’ attitudes and the use of traditional libraries by students at Bishop Stuart University and Mbarara University of Science and Technology (r = 0.921, p < 0.01). The study concludes that although there is a noticeable shift towards digital resources, traditional library services and physical materials remain relevant for a segment of the student population. It recommends that libraries modernize their systems and develop hybrid models to accommodate both traditional and digital learning preferences.

Key Words: Relationship, Students’ Attitude, Traditional Library Use.
