Abstract

This study assessed the relationship between students’ participation in Scripture Union activities and academic performance in secondary schools in Mbarara City North. The specific objectives were to assess students’ participation in Scripture Union activities, evaluate their academic performance, and determine the relationship between Scripture Union participation and academic performance. A cross-sectional research design was employed, using both quantitative and qualitative methods. Data were collected from a sample of 352 participants (80 teachers and 272 students) through self-administered questionnaires and document reviews. Simple random sampling was used to select respondents. Quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS, with frequency tables, mean scores, and Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient employed to determine relationships between variables. The findings revealed that the majority of students actively participated in Scripture Union activities and demonstrated consistent academic performance across various assessments. A strong and statistically significant positive correlation (r = 0.84, p = 0.012) was found between students’ participation in Scripture Union activities and their academic performance. The study concluded that active involvement in Scripture Union positively influences students’ academic outcomes. It recommends that the government, policymakers, school administrators, and chaplains promote Scripture Union activities within schools to foster both spiritual and academic growth. Additionally, integrating spiritual programs into the school curriculum and providing adequate support for Scripture Union activities are essential steps to enhance students’ performance holistically.
