Abstract

This study investigated the relationship between the parent-pupil relationship and pupils' academic performance in Mathematics in P.7 classes in Government-Aided Primary Schools in Ibanda Municipality. Using a cross-sectional design, data were collected from teachers, headteachers, and the Municipal Education Officer (MEO) through surveys and interviews, with both qualitative and quantitative analysis methods applied. Results indicated that parents were highly involved in financial contributions, providing school materials, and ensuring proper uniforms for their children, with moderate participation in school meetings. However, involvement in school activities was less frequent. Pupils’ academic performance showed moderate achievement, with most falling within the good and moderate categories. The study found a very strong, statistically significant positive correlation (r = 0.85, p = 0.01) between the parent-pupil relationship and pupils’ academic performance in Mathematics, indicating that better parent-pupil relationships are associated with higher academic achievement. The study concludes that while parental involvement is strong in key areas, improvements in participation in school activities are needed, and greater focus should be placed on other factors influencing academic performance. The study recommends that the government promote programs to support parental involvement, parents foster a positive attitude towards Mathematics, and teachers collaborate with parents to create a supportive learning environment for pupils.

Key Words: Parent-pupil relationship, pupils' academic performance, Mathematics, P.7 class, Government-Aided Primary Schools.
