Knowledge, Attitude & Practices of Health Workers Towards Medical Waste Management in Nairobi Kenya

Susan Nyerere

Department of Nursing, University of Nairobi Kenya

Abstract

Medical waste management is a vital aspect of public health and environmental safety, as improper handling and disposal of medical waste can lead to the transmission of infectious diseases and environmental pollution. Healthcare workers play a critical role in managing medical waste in healthcare facilities by ensuring proper segregation, handling, and disposal to mitigate these risks. Despite its importance, challenges persist in many healthcare settings, including inadequate knowledge, inconsistent practices, and limited adherence to proper waste management protocols. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of health workers regarding medical waste management at Kitwe Health Centre IV in Nairobi, Kenya. A cross-sectional study design was employed, involving 50 purposively selected health workers. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using SPSS, with descriptive statistics such as frequencies and percentages presented in tables and charts. The findings revealed that most respondents (40%) frequently encountered infectious waste, while 70% identified incineration as the appropriate disposal method for sharps. Additionally, 70% of respondents recognized the importance of proper waste management in public health. However, only 50% of the health workers consistently followed correct waste segregation procedures, and 40% adhered to disposal guidelines. The study concluded that while health workers demonstrated moderate knowledge and positive attitudes toward medical waste management, inconsistent practices and a lack of confidence in handling waste remain significant challenges. It is recommended that the government strengthen regulations and enforcement to ensure health facilities comply with safety standards for medical waste management.
